Ah, communication, it’s The ‘Sound of Music’ to my ears.
“Getting to know you, getting to know all about you, Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me”
Wonderful Lyrics from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 2013 musical, ‘The Manager and I’.
Maybe you’re starting to ask, “just how much do I have to know about my employees before it all gets a bit weird?” Well, rule of thumb, more communication is always better than less. And what better way to engage in conversation with someone than talking to them about them, what they are interested in, their family, what motivates them, what keeps them up at night and wakes them up before the rooster crows in the morning. People love to talk about themselves more than anything else (other than perhaps their kids or pets). I know I do, come on, you do too.
As I discussed in my last post, ‘Are you running a one size fits all management strategy?’. All your employees are going to be vastly different and will act and react according to their generation, race, culture, gender and a mountain of other personal circumstances and characteristics.
It’s your job, if you’re up to the task, and determined to be the best manager you can be, to really understand your employees, individually. You need to understand the stimuli for their behaviour and to organise your management strategies and practices around this understanding in order to grow employee engagement.
Today’s Super Quick To Do Quiz, is designed, as usual, to prompt some thoughts about your team, how well do you know them and where there are opportunities to get to know them better.
